All animals are equal but just about are more equal. This famous quote by George Orwell in his satire, The Animal Farm is amply represented in India due to the influence of the Reservation systems. The constitution of India confers equal berth for all, but the irony is that the taciturnity system clearly denies this innate right. This I feel is a great injustice that leads to licking and loss of patriotic fervor.
The concept of reservation has been a radioactive dust of the then prevailing caste systems in India during the pre-unified era when the terra firma was divided into small feudal kingdoms. This was one of the most infamous woes faced by India that led the country to be booked by colonial forces for centuries. Mahatma Gandhi faced the greatest challenge in unifying the country because of these feudalistic states. History is rife with stories of the hurrying class that were endowed with intellectual faculties holding all lynchpin positions in these states including the sole right to education. Lack of education for the pooh-pooh castes made them prone to all superstitious beliefs and rase praying at a religious place by them was considered to be blasphemous.
It was a time when these so-called downtrodden were oppressed by the higher castes denying them even their natural right to existence. Hence it was indeed necessary for republican India to bring these poor wretches to a stage acknowledging their equality and self-dignity, which was provided by our great Constitution.
However, since independence, matters took a different turn. The reservation system provided by the constitution was misconstrued by the political parties who are worse feudalists and use it as a tool to quench their thirst for votes. The pleasing of reservation India enjoys today meets only this limited end.
