The Islamic religion during The Mahdist gyration in Sudan from 1881-1885, was non the only driving force that united mickle against the oppressors. This Jihad or Holy War was also move by socio-economic and the discontent of many Sudanese tribes that had been neglected and discriminated since the Turco-Egyptian judiciary. When the Mahdist anarchy started by 1881, these tribes (Beja, Baqqara, Jimi, Gezira,) had social and economic reasons that unified the different tribes in Sudan. They had been isolated and taxed without governmental participation by the Egyptian administration under the British direction for many years.
Beside the internal conflicts that Sudan was having since the starting time of the Islamic invasion, as part of the conquering from the Arab world and the Christians from europium; the hostile administration of the Ottoman Empire, and the combination of a discriminated political forces between the British and the Egyptian against the southerner Sudanese, led to the inevitable revolution organized by the religion leader Abdullah Ibn Muhammad (the Mahdi, which means the chosen one).
Religion, paradoxically, was triggered the intention of rebelliousness that was germinating. The Islam faith woke the dormant sentiment that was confidential for decades and united the people from Sudan and gave them a reason to become barren form the outsiders.
We can see that economic factors triggered the people of Sudan during the Egyptian maladministration. For example they imposed a heavy poll-tax and took steps to subdue slavery in the province. Paradoxically the British wanted to await the slave-trade in Africa; however they colonized and subjugated the country of Sudan at the same time.
